Five Things You Didn’t Know About Fiji

by Kyle Bahr, 6 years ago

Despite being quite small, Fiji is packed full of fun things to do, along with heaps of culture and interesting facts. According to eTravel Minder, there are five awesome facts every traveller should know about Fiji:

1. There are three official Fijian languages

People on the island speak a mix of English, Fiji Hindi and Bau Fijian.

2. Fijian and Fiji Islanders are not the same

Don’t call everyone you see Fijians, as the indigenous Fijians tend to take offence. Fijians refers to a person of indigenous descent, with any other resident being called a Fiji Islander.

3. The whole of Fiji consists of just 10% land

Of the 322 islands and 522 islets, only 106 are inhabited. The two biggest islands are Vanua Levu and Viti Levu. 90% of the Fiji territory is water.

4. Fiji has a high literacy rate

It might not be as high as Australia’s rate, but the number of residents who are literate is quite impressive at 94%. This shows that the Fijians have access to great education.

5. Fiji Islanders are obsessed with rugby

Most islanders consider rugby to be the national sport, loving both league and union. The Fiji sevens team is one of the top teams in the world.
